Modern is a look, and the product record is the spec. 65 chairs are grouped here by shape, led by upholstered and curved backs, with 10 armchairs among them. Read the footprint first, because the group runs from slim to wide.

A style label, not a spec

Browsing by style helps you see what is out there. Ordering by style does not. The footprint, seat height and frame on each product page are what count. Open the page, read the numbers, and then decide.

Styles in this group run upholstered back on 27, curved back on 20, bucket on 8, slat back on 4, and cane and ladder back on 2 each. Padded backs appear on 23 chairs, and arms on 10. Upholstery options show up on 42 listings. Seven carry a BIFMA listing on their product pages. Prices range from $86 to $340.

Frames and seats

Metal frames number 33, wood 19, aluminum with a wood look 10, metal with a wood look 6 and steel 2. Seats are vinyl on 50, wood on 25 and fabric on 22. Indoor use is listed on 54 chairs. None lists patio use, so this is a room-only group.

Seat heights, where listed, start at 17 3/4 inches and top out at 20. Eighteen inches is the most common, on 9 chairs, followed by 18 1/2 on 6. Both pair with a table near 29 to 30 inches.

The footprint gap

Three examples show how wide the spread gets. A metal dining chair measures 24 1/4 by 26 1/2 inches. A ladder back aluminum dining chair measures 18 1/2 by 23. Another metal dining chair lists 24 by 26.

Do the math with a row. Ten of the 24 1/4-inch chairs side by side take 57 1/2 inches more width than ten of the 18 1/2-inch ones. That is nearly five feet, and a window wall does not stretch.

Behind each chair a guest wants 18 to 24 inches to push back. A deep, wide chair eats into the 36-inch service aisle faster than a slim one, so keep the plan on paper first.

Beside these chairs

Rounder seats are collected in bucket chairs. For a more classic line, traditional chairs is the counterpart. The full padded range is in upholstered chairs. Lay out a few in a cafe plan to check which ones fit your aisle.
