Small tables, their tops and their bases

A small table does a lot of work: holds a laptop, two plates and a sleeve of napkins, then gets wiped again and again. These guides cover cleaning products, pairing a top with a new base, testing top samples and tables cut for awkward corners.

Start with a tape measure

Check the finish before you check the cleaner, since the wrong spray can mark a top that looked tough. When a base wobbles or a top wears, you may only need to replace one half of the pair. Our notes show how to measure for that swap, and when a custom size beats a standard one.
